What is nail enhancements

Artificial nails, also known as fake nails, false nails, fashion nails, nail enhancements, or nail extensions, are coverings placed over fingernails as fashion accessories. Some artificial nails attempt to mimic the appearance of real fingernails as closely as possible, while other designs may deliberately stray in appearance from real fingernails. Artificial nails are made from a wide variety of materials.  It is known as Acrylic, Gel or Silk/Fibre.

It is a fact that most of us do not have the kind of nails we would like! This could be for a number of reasons including weak, brittle or bitten nails. Nail Enhancements can transform your nails producing strong natural looking nails that can be worn permanently.

There is a wide variety of enhancements that you can choose from: Natural, French, Glitter or color.  You can do tips or just overlays on your natural nail with no extension.  Please check out the gallery page to see examples of all types of nail enhancements and inspiration on how you can transform your nails.

Gel nails

Unlike toothpaste-thick gel products of the past, today’s gels have a similar consistency to nail polish.

They are brushed onto your nails, nail tips, or nail appliqués to extend length. After your nail technician applies each coat, you must put your nails under ultraviolet (UV) light for up to two minutes to "cure" or harden the product. There is no odor during the application process.  Gel nails are considered the latest innovation in nail enhancements, and consist of pre-mixed polymers and monomers. Gel nails can be used as nail extenders, or as a ‘hard coating’ for your natural nails.

Upkeep: Over time, gel grow out with your nails. Every two to three weeks, you should return to the salon to have your nails filled in. With your fill we will gently file down the gel edge closest to your nail bed, then fill in the empty area between your nail bed and the existing gel nail.

Can nail enhancements damage my natural nails?

A skilled, qualified professional should be used to ensure that the enhancements are correctly applied. Poorly applied gel or acrylic nails can lift and if water becomes trapped between the enhancement and the natural nails, mould and fungus can take root. When nails are placed under the UV lamp to cure, ensure that the temperature is not too hot and keep your hands away from the bulbs of the lamps where the most heat is genrated. Watch out for unhygienic or unsanitary salons – nail technicians who don’t adhere to hygiene procedures should be avoided at all costs. The secret to ensuring that your natural nails stay healthy and in good condition is to avoid ripping off the enhancements!  Always let the nail technician soak them off properly for you if you are not sure how to do it.  Ensure your technician is properly qualified and adhere to all safety and hygiene practices.
